About Robert

After working for six years in the pension division of the trust departments of two major banks, I, along with three partners, founded R.L. Compton and Associates Inc., specializing in the design, installation and administration of qualified retirement plans. That was in 1974.

Three years later, I became the sole shareholder and moved the company's office from downtown Baltimore to Bel Air, Maryland, then to what affectionately became known as "Global Headquarters" in Jarrettsville, Maryland.

With the help of several dedicated and valuable assistants - including my wife, Bobbi, whose contributions for the most part went unnoticed but certainly not unappreciated - we provided plan services to small company retirement plans through the mid-1990s.

In 1997, my son, Chris, joined the firm, and within a few years, a higher profile and growth were the order of the day. That meant more moves, first to Lutherville and later to our office in Towson.

Twenty years later, we are a much larger firm providing a broader array of services, both for the better.

While I have enjoyed the ride, I have not been the driver. That credit goes to Chris. Some people work well with families, others don't. I'm happy to say Chris and I have an outstanding working relationship.

The firm's success is owed to many individuals, particularly its employees and clients. For all of them, I am extremely appreciative.

I've learned a few things along the way:

  1. Always answer a ringing phone.

  2. Be where you say you'll be and do what you say you'll do.

  3. Be as competent as possible in your field. Expertise generally trumps salesmanship.

  4. Don't think about what you can sell a client, ask how you can help them.

  5. Even though you may sometimes be tempted, never burn bridges.

Several years ago we celebrated the firm's 30th anniversary. Some thought it was my retirement party. While I am not working as hard as I once did, I continue to work with companies and individuals who are 30-plus year clients.

Cutting back on my work allows me more time to travel with Bobbi, work outside - raking leaves, chopping wood, mowing the lawn - and go to our beach house in Delaware.
